Non- Approved OTP functional unit services Non- Approved The "Slot YK Get Device Info" service resolves successfully. Table 3: Modes List and Description The module powers up in an uninitialized state upon first use. The operator must configure the module per the instructions provided in Section 11.1. Once this process is completed, the module enters the Approved mode. The Non-Proprietary Security Policy for Yubico, Inc., YubiKey 5 Cryptographic Module This document may be freely reproduced and distributed, but only in its entirety and without modification Page 10 of 67 module retains its current configuration settings across power-cycling. The module is single-threaded: while one service is in process, no other service is. Mode Change Instructions and Status: The module enters the non-Approved mode whenever a non-Approved service is invoked and exits when the said service completes. The only non-Approved services are contained by the OTP functional unit. In order to access the OTP functional unit, OTP must be selected (NFC) or the designated OTP endpoints must be used (USB). While OTP is selected, no other services beyond OTP services, namely those listed in Section 4.4, are available. 2.5 ALGORITHMS The YubiKey 5 Cryptographic Module supports the approved cryptographic algorithms shown in Table 4. The authentication method of both Crypto Officer and User is the password-based authentication that the module performs Memorized Secret Non-Proprietary Security Policy for Yubico, Inc., YubiKey 5 Cryptographic Module This document may be freely reproduced and distributed, but only in its entirety and without modification Page 22 of 67 and Single-Factor Cryptographic Device described in NIST SP 800-140E and SP 800-63B-4 (refer to Sections 3.1.1, 3.1.2, and 3.1.6). This role has separate authentication methods as indicated in Table 13. Section 11.1 describes the procedure by which an operator is to perform authentication as part of the module initialization process. The module supports three authentication methods: PIN verification, knowledge of a shared secret, and possession of a private key. Method Name Description Security Mechanism Strength Each Attempt Strength per Minute PIN verification PIN verification Comparison of a 6 byte string A minimum 6 byte (48 bit) binary string has a probability that a random attempt will succeed or a false acceptance will occur of 1/2^48 which is less than 1/1,000,000. Each authentication attempt takes approximately 60 ms which allows a maximum of 1000 attempts per minute. Therefore, the probability of successfully authenticating to the module within one minute through random attempts is 1000/2^48, which is less than 1/100,000. Knowledge of a shared secret Knowledge of a shared secret Cryptographic Software The shared secret is either a 128, 192, or 256-bit AES key or a minimum length 112 bits HMAC key. The probability that a random attempt will succeed or a false acceptance will occur is at most 1/2^112 which is less than 1/1,000,000. Authentication attempts are limited to 6,000 per minute due to performance constraints. Therefore, the probability of successfully authenticating to the module within one minute through random attempts is 6,000/2^112, which is less than 1/100,000. Possession of Private Key Knowledge of the static private key Cryptographic Software The KAS-ECC private key uses curve P-256, which has a security strength of 128 bits. The probability that a random attempt will succeed or a false acceptance will occur is 1/2^128 which is less than 1/1,000,000. Authentication attempts are limited to 6,000 per minute due to performance constraints. Therefore, the probability of successfully authenticating to the module within one minute through random attempts is 6,000/2^128, which is less than 1/100,000. The CO is responsible for configuring SSPs and resetting User credentials. The User performs cryptographic operations and utilizes the module as an authenticator. The unauthenticated role has access to respond to challenges, read non-security- relevant information, perform self-tests, and reset services only. Name Type Operator Type Authentication Methods Crypto Officer Role CO PIN verification Knowledge of a shared secret Possession of Private Key User Role User PIN verification Knowledge of a shared secret Unauthenticated Role N/A None Table 14: Roles 4.3 APPROVED SERVICES The module supports six functional units, each of which provides access to a unique set of services: PIV, OATH, OpenPGP, FIDO, Security Domain, and YubiHSM Auth. All Approved services and non-Approved services are accessible over both USB and NFC interfaces. Please note that all services can be performed over a Secure Channel (SCP03 or SCP11) with the exception of: − FIDO services conducted directly over USB − Services that establish the Secure Channel o Initialize Update service and External Authenticate service that establish the SCP03 session o Perform Security operation service, Internal Authenticate service and Mutual Authenticate service that establish the SCP11 session Non-Proprietary Security Policy for Yubico, Inc., YubiKey 5 Cryptographic Module This document may be freely reproduced and distributed, but only in its entirety and without modification Page 24 of 67 Name Description Indicat or Inputs Outputs Security Functio ns SSP Access Activate Applet - OpenPGP Activate OpenPGP applet with factory defaults.
